What Is The Mirena IUD?
Mirena is a small, t-shaped plastic intrauterine device (IUD) that releases by releasing the chemical progestogen levonorgestreal. The Mirena coil is implanted inside the uterus for up to 5 years to prevent pregnancy. It is manufactured by Bayer Pharmacueticals. Bayer is also the maker of Yaz birth control pills Yaz is currently in settlements for blood clots.
History of the Mirena IUD
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Mirena in 2000 as a birth control device In 2009. The FDA also approved Mirena IUD to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in child bearing women.
Warning notices from the FDA for deceptive marketing claims for the Mirena.
In December 2009 Bayer was warned by the FDA that its advertising omitted serious and frequent risks associated with Mirena. This warning letter to Bayer over its Mirena “look and feel great” claims and understating the potential dangers. The FDA referenced the organizing of home party promotional events that claimed that the use of the IUD would improve couples’ relationships and sex lives. The women “look and feel great.” claim was criticized as being overly promotional and misleading. The FDA said that there was no evidence the device did this and in fact our women callers tell us ” the Mirena has ruined my life”. “I want a lawyer and I want to sue for this misery” None of those things will help someone look or feel “great,”
