What Is the Mirena IUD?
The Mirena intrauterine device or IUD and the Mirena coil are intrauterine birth control devises that incorporates a coil plus infusion of a progesterone-like hormone (levonorgestrel). This hormone is released in small doses for the term the device remains inserted. It has a cord dangling down into the upper part of the vagina and remains in the uterus for five to 10 years.
The Mirena IUD stops sperm from reaching the egg by releasing copper into the womb and fallopian tubes. The release of copper changes the chemical makeup of the fluids in the uterus and the changes prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg.
The Mirena May Stop Pregnancy By:
- Thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering your uterus
- Inhibiting sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
- Making the lining of your uterus thin
- Mirena may stop the release of your egg from your ovary
. The above actions work together to prevent pregnancy.
